Celebrate 130 Years of Charlie Chaplin


2019 marks the 130th anniversary of Charlie Chaplin’s birth. For the occasion, several events and activities around the world, licensed by the Chaplin office, will pay tribute to him throughout the course of the year. There will be fantastic events at Chaplin’s World, film screenings with with orchestras performing Chaplin’s scores live to picture, new exhibitions in France, a new ballet in Bratislava, the release of new music albums, and much more!

The Birth of the Tramp Celebration - One Year Later

Geneva Celebrates 100 Years of the Tramp

2014 marks 100 years of Charlie Chaplin’s Tramp character. For this cinematic milestone, the Cinémas du Grütli in Geneva are screening several of Charles Chaplin’s films : The Kid, Modern Times, The Circus, The Great Dictator, and more!!

Launch of The Keystone Album at Paris Photo
To mark the centenary of the Tramp, Editions Xavier Barral and the Musée de l’Elysée are publishing a unique volume from the Charles Chaplin photographic archives that were deposited at the museum in 2011: The Keystone Album. It presents Chaplin’s first year in front of Keystone’s cameras in 1914. To examine these 795 stills is to witness the birth of a character and see the beginnings of a filmmaker. Published in French and in English, this beautiful book is enriched with two essays and a filmography.

**The Costume of Silent Comedy: Charlie Chaplin and The Tramp Restored**

Charlie Chaplin’s “Little Tramp” character was once the most widely recognized figure in the entire world. Discover the first-ever filmed images of the Tramp as film historian and preservationist Serge Bromberg hosts a unique show full of stories, behind-the-scenes footage, restoration samples and never-before-exhibited documents. Other treats include a new print of A Night in the Show (1915) and the theatrical world premiere of the new restoration of The Bank (1915). Since 2003, as part of the Chaplin Project, Bromberg’s Lobster Films, Cineteca di Bologna and the British Film Institute have been working to restore all of Charlie Chaplin’s early films. To celebrate the conclusion of the project, Serge Bromberg will accompany the films on the piano and discuss the evolution of the beloved Little Tramp.

Presented as part of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ ongoing series at LACMA.

2014 marks 100 years since the start of the First World War, and also 100 years since Charles Chaplin’s first film. A two-day seminar in Paris will take a look at his first years of work, and in particular the critical reactions at the time, the distibution of Chaplin’s first films, and the artistic and theoritical interpretations of his first films worldwide.
