-i didn't want to post a comment as they always seem to disspear when the blog has been outposted -I personally think that the happy ending is a happy ending and reality. And the dream sequence within a dream sequence was either a plot accesory (to allow for the nimph dance), or a measure of decieveing the viewer (perhaps subconsciously), into thinking that the larger dream is infact reality. At the end, the city man still seems flurty with edna, but in the same way he was before this romantic 'dream sequence'. Others may argue that the events of the entire picture were a dream of charlie's as the film opens on him in bed, and it's not like the tramp (having tried hard to stay in bed already) to give up so soon. And we do not see him wake up doing the 'it was all a dream' at the end, because, let's face it - it would spoil the film. I personally disagree with this idea of the whole film being a dream though, and think that it is a real ending, not a dream :) andy

Andy--thanks for your comments! My computer has been schizo and deleted what I had written. I agree with what you say in that I think the happy ending is the real ending.
