Re: The Virtual Chaplin

You are correct that there is a lot of misinformation and half-truth out there about Charlie!  Then again, this is true of all famous people.  Whether intentionally or accidentally, stories begin and lies are told.

You mentioned Chaplin's autobiography.  There is also My Life in Pictures.  This was written by Charlie too and holds a lot of photos you may enjoy.  It was released in the United States in 1974.

There are no more by him that I know of.  However, there are a handful you may want to look at by others.  A very comprehensive book called Chaplin: Genius of the Cinema by Jeffrey Vance.  This book has a lot of good information as well as many well-preserved photos.

Yet another is a book called Six Men by Alastair Cooke.  It is Alastair's opinion but also has some good trivia tidbits you may have a difficult time finding elsewhere.

The final book in my collection of Chaplin texts (at least until my next browse on eBay) is My Father, Charlie Chaplin.  This is a new addition to my collection and I must admit I have not read it yet.  It is written by Charles Chaplin, Jr.  The motivation for its publication could be debated as could, I am sure, some of its content.  It is definitely opinion...but it is the supposed opinion of one of the children he had with Lita Grey.

I have found that one simply must read and then realize that there was a lot said, both true and fabricated, about Charlie while he was alive...and that has not changed since his death.

Good luck and enjoy your discoveries!
