Children show in London

Children from several schools in Walworth, where Chaplin grew up, put on a fabulous presentation of Charlie Chaplin’s South London at the Unicorn Theatre on June 27th 2008.

They showed us how children in Victorian times played and worked. Particularly impressive were the Surrey Square infants school presentations of clog dancing, as Charlie would have danced with the Eight Lancashire Lads, and playing the spoons to a selection of popular music hall songs of the time.

Children from St Peter’s School Walworth enacted Charlie and Sydney’s childhood, including time at the workhouse, with panache. One child quoted from My Autobiography beautifully and brought tears to the eyes. Crampton School played out scenes from a Victorian childhood, reminding us that even in the direst poverty, white starched clothes were the norm. Their enactment of the workhouse showed how frightening it must have been for Charlie and Sydney.
Kids from Surrey School Junior School worked with “Tom Cross”:http://www.tomcrossanimation.com on a wonderful animated film, Charlie Chaplin meets the Kung Fu Cat.
We hope this will soon be available for you to see on “Tom’s website”:http://www.tomcrossanimation.com
St John’s Primary ended their great silent film on stage show with a rendition of Smile that had the whole theatre, local mayors, MP and parents alike, singing with them.

Sadly the theatre was not big enough for all the children to see each others acts and they had to wait patiently outside.
Hopefully, if this project is renewed, a larger venue could be found.

Jack McInroy, from the staff of St Peter’s School and huge Chaplin fan, dressed up as Charlie and amused the audience during the stage changes.

Thanks to everyone who worked on this project. May there be many more!

Chaplin laughter helps to heal !

Chaplin laughter helps to heal !

Research at the UCLA Jonsson Cancer Center for children found that when children watched classic humorous films and tv shows - the works of Mr. Chaplin included among them - they were able to withstand a painful medical procedure longer and with less stress and trauma.
This has huge implications for children and adults who cope with chronic painful illnesses.

Major Primary School Project on Chaplin

Utilising the iconic figure of south London’s own Charlie Chaplin, over 100 London South Bank University trainee teachers and an estimated 300 children and teachers at 5 local primary schools are working on a local history project this term which looks at “Charlie Chaplin’s South London”.

Apart from the input of students and teachers, theatre educators, artists, local historians and film-makers will be working alongside children at St John’s, St Peter’s, Crampton, Surrey Square Infants and Surrey Square Junior school (All in Chaplin’s birthplace of Walworth).

The culmination of this cross-curricular project will be a dramatic performance of children’s work on the late Victorian London of Chaplin’s childhood at the Unicorn Theatre on Friday 27th June (1.30 pm)

Invited guests include : * Simon Hughes MP * the Mayors of Lambeth and Southwark and * leading Chaplin fan, TV personality Paul Merton.

In addition to these schools, over 20 more Lambeth and Southwark schools have been invited to participate in the project and the best contributions from children in all these schools will be considered for inclusion in an accompanying book on the subject, written by LSBU historian Dr Alan Parkinson. This book is likely to be “launched” early in December, at the same time as the initial screening of Peter Wyeth’s documentary film on Chaplin’s London.
